Elephant Urn

Elephant Safari Dance Rearing elephants seen on large vessels painted by Zinhle Nene in 2016 were the inspiration for the Cole & Son, Ardmore Collection, 'Safari Dance' wall paper which depicts Zinhe’s illustrations of patterned elephants. With the launch of the wallpapers and our own Zambezi fabric collection at the beginning of this year 2017, we decided to re-inspire the artists and to create 3D works that looked at the simple colour-ways and designs of these new 2D collections. Zimbabwean artists, Lovemore Sithole threw the urn and Alex Sibanda sculpted elephants in relief onto the vessel and created 3D elephants on the lid, whilst Zinhle’s young niece painted the urn with loving, detailed care with the patterns seen in the wallpaper. The end result is fun, and the artists learnt to limit their palette and think more about design. We have exhibited this incredible work in London with the Safari Dance wall paper as backdrop.
