Virginia Xaba

Virginia Xaba was born in 1975 in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal.

One day, walking home from school, she met Fée Halsted, founder of Ardmore Ceramic Art, who offered to show her around the studio and view the artworks.

The result was that Virginia started painting at Ardmore studio in 1992, and was fortunate enough to have Bonnie Ntshalintshali as a mentor for sculpting, while Sindi Ntshalintshali taught her to paint.

Virginia soon chose to channel her energy into painting and enriched the Ardmore repertoire with her meticulous renderings of natural elements.

Virginia’s work closely reflected nature’s patterns with precision akin to the works of naturalist John James Audubon and artist Walton Ford. She created depth through delicate shading and fine detail.

Her exceptional skill won her the 2007 Start Nivea Art Award given to emerging artists in KwaZulu-Natal, for a painting on canvas that she submitted to the competition.

Her artworks have been included in almost every Ardmore exhibition and the designs on the Hermes scarves were inspired by her work.

Sadly Virginia has now left Ardmore.
