Thembi Zikalala

Thembi Doris Zikala was born on the 31st August 1965, in Durban. Thembi attended Emangweni Primary School for seven years, and then went on to high school for two years.

Thembi is married and has three children.

She worked at Sappi Forest for a year and then heard about Ardmore from Ottilia Nxumalo.

“One day I went to the studio and met many friends like Mavis Shabalala and Sindy Ntshalintshali,” she says.

Since Thembi started working at Ardmore there have been big changes in her life. She says: “I always wish that God will keep us for a longer time and help us to grow and keep Ardmore growing.”

Thembi is a tall, shy woman, but her works express an energy. She prefers to work in the traditional full design of her Zulu culture where all her pastel colours are intricately woven into a basket like tapestry of blues and ochres.

In 2009 Thembi with the closure of the ‘Berg studio remained in the Champagne Valley area until 2013 when she returned to join her fellow artists at Caversham.

Says Fee: “I was delighted to see Thembi return to the fold and we are thrilled to be exhibiting her works at major shows across the globe.”
