Our ceramics are made by local artists - ordinary people from the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal,
who are given training, materials, a studio and a guaranteed market for their work,
under the guidance of our founder, Fée Halsted.
Sondelani was born in 1980 at Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal, where he was educated.
He was introduced to Ardmore in the ‘Berg by his friend, sculptor, Nhlanhla Nsundwane, and joined the studio in 2001.
He moved with Ardmore founder Fée Halsted in 1996 when her family went to Springvale Farm in Rosetta and then moved again in 2004 when Fée relocated the studio to Caversham.
Under the mentorship of Fée, Nhlanhla Nsundwane and Petros Gumbi, Sondelani has learned the techniques of ceramic sculpture while developing his own style.
His artworks were very popular and included flower and animal platters, tureens and large animal candlesticks.
Hard-working, responsible and with a driving entrepreneurial focus, he developed a prolific artistic partnership with thrower, Sabelo Khoza. Together they were among Ardmore’s most successful artists.
In 2011, Sondelani’s Hunter’s Urn was selected to be shown at the Jabulisa – Best of KZN exhibition at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg, and is now part of the Tatham collection.
His Skeleton sculpture was chosen to travel to the Istanbul Biennale as part of the Ardmore AIDS Collection.
Sondelani left Ardmore in 2012.
