Our ceramics are made by local artists - ordinary people from the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, who are given training, materials, a studio and a guaranteed market for their work, under the guidance of our founder, Fée Halsted.
Smangele Nene was born on 1 June 1996. Her two aunts, Jabu and Zinhle Nene and her cousins, Nozipho Ntshalintshali and Slindiwe Mchunu, are all painters at Ardmore.
Sma joined us for our June 2016 Ardmore Winter School programme, where she learned how to draw, paint and mix colours with mentors, Wiseman Ndlovu and Fee Halsted.
She also liked to hear gogo’s (Fee’s) stories when she took the artists around the museum.
Sma is a very talented painter, like her aunts. She loves pattern and design and one day wants to be as good as Zinhle Nene.
She says: “My favourite animal to paint is a giraffe, as I like their patterns.”
Sma enjoys working at Ardmore and wants to be one of our top painters. “I also want to own my own house, buy a car and make my mother proud.”
Fee says: “I am sure Sma will continue to excelunder the tutelage of the very creative Nene family.”
